Personal Evaluation

During project X I feel i have learned so much about how to work with other people, take on board their ideas and have an insight into different ways of working. I feel that this will help improve my personal practise in the future. Furthermore working in my group was mostly enjoyable as everyone got along and we were able to easily brainstorm ideas, however towards the end I felt under more and more pressure to make sure everything was as good as it possible could be as i didn't want to let the group down. This was especially the case when making the garment because up until this point, the four of us had been able to work together on everything. But only two members of the group could construct the garment and this proved difficult when we had different ideas of how to go about it. However in the end we were able to compromise and I learned different ways to pattern cut and make a garment. Overall I think I worked well in this group collaboration because i was able to listen to others and compromise along side making important decisions nearer the end of the project when necessary.

Final Reflection of Project X - Final Garment

When we began our initial design ideas and sketches, we instantly were picturing a long and flowing garment, because after sampling our motif we realised it worked well running down the fabric. Our group was very good at discussing new ideas and taking everyone's visions into account, and this is exactly how we decided on making a floor length jacket for our final garment. Although we could be brain storming for a while i feel this helped the group decide on a goal and direction. In the long run it saved time and helped focus the group.

When designing we all had different styles, but that helped feed more ideas in the group instead of confusing the flow of the project. Fist sketches communicated large or even 3D constructed shoulders and or sleeves that would add to our 3D print. This was an idea the whole group were keen on. However after the print proved time consuming this concept was not developed enough to follow through on to the final designs and garment. Even though i believe the print is strong enough on its own it would have been interesting to sample and develop this idea further if we had more time.

Drape pages from portfolio looking at binding the front hem with a plane darker fabric. We trailed binding on the final garment but none of the team were happy with the result as it wasn't as clean and neat as we hoped. Unfortunately we just hemmed the edges. The drape worked really we as we able to visualise the final garment and easily change shapes that did not work, or develop shapes that worked well. We used our, already hand screened printed fabric alongside other fabrics to really be able to see what our final garment may look like.

Sketches scanned in to photoshop and edited into and anaglyphic picture. This was a really quick and it was and easy way to tie our theme into our illustrations. I would like to develop this method further, possible by doing a photo shoot with our garment using this method.

I feel the print on our garment works really well and as a group we engineered it to fit our pattern pieces. However I'm very pleased we chose a darker un printed fabric for the top of the jacket and sleeves as the fabrics work harmoniously together. As a team we had very strong characters as we all had a vision about what we wanted to achieve, fortunately this worked in our favour as that meant we were abundant with ideas, allowing us to pick and chose the best or combine some that worked alongside each other. Especially when it came to the print room the 4 of us really pulled together to complete the work we had set out to do in the time we had. With more time I would have loved to experiment with this print digitally, so that we could have the sample, with the lions heads closer together on the garment. Furthermore to develop the 3D construction aspect of our research.

Final Reflection of Project X - Print Samples

When evaluating myself and in a team collaboration, I first consider how we worked in the print room sampling different motifs on to different fabrics. As a team our project was heavily based on aiming to achieve an anaglyphic effect though print. This involved a lot of time spent measuring out where the screens should be placed to insure we achieved this effect to the best of our ability.  Therefore, we were short of time when it came to printing because of how long it took us, we also had to wash the screens in between laying prints. However we were able to quickly established a colour scheme of red and blue this worked in our favour because right from the start we were able to narrow down what we wanted as a team, minimising time that could have be wasted.

This became our final print.

As a group we liked this motif but we felt it didn't give us the illusion and abstract effect we were striving for.

We aslo experimented with different motifs layered up on top of on another, but again as a group we decided this particular sample was too busy

We also tried print sampling on darker fabrics but the colours achieved were not as bright, bold and vibrant as we wanted

Samples were experimented on already printed fabrics, this does create the weird illusion effect we, as a team strived for, as it does trick your eyes, however we again thought that this print wasn't as good as the lion heads that we chose because agin there was too much going on.

As a team we feel this was our strongest print sample as it achieved everything that we wanted, however, unfortunately due to time constraints we were unable to use this print on the final garment because this sample alone took 1 hour. However by doing this sample it made us more aware of time and allowed us to chose a print and process that was viable. Furthermore we could have had this printed digitally but we decided we wanted a hand printed finish.
